About us

Two generations, one mountain

Saluwan Farm sits in Tai'an, Miaoli, in the traditional territory of the Atayal people. It is my father Yaba's mountain — and the place this Atayal daughter, who has wandered the world, has always come back to.

My story

Ninety countries, and the road home

I am a daughter of the Atayal. I have spent most of my life in cities, and travelled through ninety countries and more towns than I can count; and every road, in the end, has led me back to one place — this mountain, the orchard my father still keeps, and the air that smells the way it did when I was small.

Re-opening Saluwan Farm is my way home: back to my roots, back to the purest place I know. My nostalgia lives here — and so does what I want to leave for those who come after.

That is what this website is for: to send you the taste of the mountain, to invite you up to breathe it, and to let its language be heard by more people.

My father

Yaba's mountain

Yaba keeps the orchard and the bamboo groves. When to dig the shoots, when the plums are sweet, when the mountain should be left to rest — no one knows better.

He carves bamboo cups with a mountain knife, speaks Atayal, and treats fruit trees and people alike without hurry. He is also a certified Atayal language teacher — the tongue of the mountain is his to teach.

The land

Land watched over by our ancestors

Tai'an lies in the mountains of Miaoli, in the traditional territory of the Atayal. The orchard is on the hillside, the bamboo grove behind it, and below, the valleys fold away one after another.

This land is not ours alone. It holds the rules our elders left, the birds and animals and wildflowers that live here, and everything that arrived long before us. That is why we made three promises to this mountain.

Our covenant with the mountain

Three promises we made to this mountain

Never rushed

We don't force the trees to ripen early, and we don't push out yields with chemicals. The fruit is sweet when the mountain says so — we only climb the tree when it's time.

Never disturbed

We walk the forest lightly. We'll show you the bamboo groves, the wildflowers and the creeks, but we won't startle anything that lives here. They were here long before us.

Never forgotten

What our elders taught us, we remember with our hands: carving a bamboo cup, naming a wild herb, listening by the fire to a story of village life. What is remembered can be carried far.

Weave of the Mountain

Still on the loom

Atayal weaving has its keepers and its rules. Each pattern belongs to a particular village and family, and is not for anyone to take and use.

So this thread is still on the loom. In the spirit of Taiwan's Protection Act for the Traditional Intellectual Creations of Indigenous Peoples, we'll wait for our village's blessing and authorization before we share it with you properly. The weaving in this photo is for looking, not for sale.

Saluwan Farm is one of the brands of Yumin Group, our parent brand. The name keeps my father's name inside it — 亮, bright — and saluwan is Atayal for daybreak, the early morning: Papak Wa'a stands to the east, the sun reaches this mountain first, and dawn is when we walk into the bamboo grove.

A covenant with the mountain, carried far: that is what the name Yumin (盟遠) means to us, and the way we do everything. The Yumin mark is that one line — up the mountain, over the summit and on toward the far horizon, where the sun sits.
