Breath & Memory of the Mountain

Come up, and spend a day inside village life

There's no show here, and no itinerary. We'll walk you along the paths we walk every day and do the things we've always done — the mountain takes care of the rest.

Nature

Breath of the MountainBamboo trails · Wildflower slopes · Gardenias · Young maples · A place to look at the mountains

Walk a bamboo trail and stop among the wildflowers. In early summer the gardenias scent the path; in autumn there are the maples we planted — still small, and we are waiting with them for the first red leaves. The valley has the sound of the creek; the grove has the sound of the wind. We'll show you the way and won't explain too much — the mountain speaks for itself.

Culture

Memory of the MountainCup carving · Shoot digging · Seasonal harvest · Atayal words

Carve a bamboo cup with Yaba and his mountain knife, and take it home. Dig bamboo shoots at dawn and eat them at noon. Sit down for a slice of ordinary village life and learn a few words of Atayal. None of it is a performance — it's simply what we do.

Stay until dark

Night on the MountainDinner at the farmhouse · Dusk in the valley · The mountain after dark

When the sun drops behind the ridge, we light candles outside the farmhouse. Vegetables from the garden, the flavours of the mountain, a dinner that is in no hurry — and after dark, the mountain is quieter still. If you'd like to stay for dinner, tell us on LINE beforehand and we'll keep a table for you.

A day on the mountain

A day up here goes something like this

  1. Dawn

    Shoots in the grove

The dew is still on the ground. Yaba takes you into the bamboo to spot the shoots, dig them, and carry them down. (Shoot season only.)

  2. Morning

    A walk on the mountain

A bamboo trail, a slope of wildflowers, a place to sit and look at the mountains. How far we go depends on your legs — and on the sky.

  3. Noon

    Lunch on the mountain

This morning's shoots and whatever the garden gives, cooked simply and eaten together.

  4. Afternoon

    Carve a cup

Yaba shows you how to hold the mountain knife. Carve slowly, without hurry, and take your cup home.

  5. Dusk

    Sit a while

Watch the light change colour in the valley, learn a few words of Atayal, and say lawkah to Yaba.

  6. After dark

    Dinner at the farmhouse

If you stay, we light the candles outside the farmhouse and take our time over a mountain dinner. (By arrangement.)

No two days are alike — the season, the weather and your own pace all have a say. This is the rough shape; we'll settle the details together on LINE.

How to book

On LINE, in three steps

How many of you, when you'd like to come, and what you'd like to try — or nothing at all yet; we'll help you think it through.

2

Look at the season and the sky together

Shoots in shoot season, plums in early summer, kumquats in winter. We'll shape the day around the season and the weather.

3

Before you set out

We'll send you the route and a few small reminders. Then — see you on the mountain.

Before you come up

A few things to know first

  • Fewer is better. The mountain stays quiet, and we can look after you properly. Tell us your numbers and we'll work it out together.
  • The weather decides. Mountain weather turns fast. Heavy rain means another day; light rain, another path — we'll decide together.
  • Good shoes and a jacket. Mornings and evenings are cool up here, and the paths are wet with dew.
  • Tread lightly. Don't pick, don't take — except what we harvest together. Everything living here arrived long before us.
  • Signal comes and goes. Save the route before you set out; once we've met, you won't need your phone much.
